Emotional Intelligence

So, what exactly is emotional intelligence? Whilst perhaps difficult to define, we nonetheless immediately recognise it in others when we see or experience it.  Some describe it as “charisma” or “star quality”. EI is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain relationships, cope with and respond to challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.

The core of high EI is self-awareness: if you don't understand your own motivations and behaviours, it is almost impossible to develop an understanding of others. A lack of self-awareness can also derail your ability to think rationally and apply technical capabilities.

Myth #1  - EI is too "touchy-feely" for the workplace. Wrong. Research has shown that a high IQ and technical skills, whilst important, can only be considered entry level requirements for most executive level positions. Without EI a person can have the best training in the world, an incisive, analytical mind, and an endless supply of smart ideas, but she or he still won’t make a great leader.

Myth #2 – EI…you either have it, or you don’t. Wrong again. Emotional Intelligence is a dynamic measure. With the right diagnostics it is easy to identify the areas where people have a well developed EI quotient and where there are gaps. With the right interventions and a willingness to be your best self most people can improve their EI.

Using a blended learning approach underpinned by a personal diagnostic questionnaire, case study discussion and insights from contemporary thinkers in the fields of EI and neuroscience we will guide you to:

  • understand at a deep level the various components of EI and why they are important for emerging and current leaders

  • enhance your awareness of how you are showing up in each of the EI areas to validate what you are doing well and to highlight what you should be doing more of (or what you should be stopping altogether)

  • be the kind of leader you aspire to being and the kind of leader others respect and are motivated and inspired by.
